Comics and video games have always gotten along, and we’ve had a lot of adaptations on our consoles. In our report today, we reviewed five video games based on comics. Comic-based movies, toys, and video games are more fashionable than ever and, therefore, we want to discuss with you 11 video games inspired by this complicated art of storytelling. First of all, we need to make it clear that this list is not one of the best comic-based games, and that we have bypassed Marvel and most DC games to be able to talk about other heroes. Since the Times of Atari 2600, comics have had a hole in our consoles, and that’s why we wanted to do this report.
- Asterix (1992)
These Romans are crazy! Asterix the Gaul, the comic book created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo in 1959, which takes us to Rome in 50 BC.C., he’s jumped 15 times into the world of video games. We took over the Grand arcade Konami developed in 1992. A beat’em up-type video game whose design, history and gags perfectly recreated the cartoons. In it, we can choose Asterix or the big Obelix to confront the Roman legionaries at different levels of play.
- DuckTales (1989)
The Animated Series “Patoaventuras,” produced by Disney Television Animation, premiered in 1987 and ended in 1990. Based on the comics by Carl Barks ‘ Uncle Gilito and Duck Universe, it had a magnificent adaptation made by Capcom in 1989 that appeared on NES and Game Boy. This is a platform game where Uncle Gilito has to travel around the world and collect different treasures to remain the richest duck in the universe. Throughout the game, we come across various enemies like the Beagle Boys or a curious Count Dracula.
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (1991)
In the 1990s, Konami was the king as comic book adaptations to video games. In 1991 he brought us Teenage Mutant Ninja Tuttle: Turtles in Time, an adaptation of the universe of Ninja Turtles that went through the Arcade and Super Nintendo. In the game, Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo, and Donatello not only ate pizza, but they also kicked a few butts. In 2009 it was released on PS3 and Xbox 360 under the name Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled.
- Sam and Max: Hit the Road (1993)
We know that this report is becoming a bit novel, but it was a perfect time for comic-based games and the Golden Age of graphic adventures, a genre to which Sam and Max belong: Hit the Road. LucasArts was based on Steve Purcell’s comic book, Sam & Max: Freelance Police, to get us into the skin of Sam and Max, two of the best detectives in the world of video games, and not precisely because of their methods of solving crimes.

And another Beat ’em up the game, one of the most commonly used genres to represent comics in video games. The graphic novel written by Bryan Lee O’Malley features an infinity of allusions to the gamer world that come back to life in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game. Ramona Flowers ‘ heart is the ultimate target of our friend Scott Pilgrim, but seven ex-boyfriends won’t make it easy for us to conquer her.
